Choice Piece
Exhibition Text
The piece I decided to make was a collage that I then drew. I focused on the stereotypes of women. Women have been stereotyped in the media with how they should look and how they should act. I first put the collage together than I drew it with different mediums.
Meaning
In the media, women have been stereotyped. They were given stereotypes on how to act and how they should look. I wanted to focus on the impossible stereotypes women have been plagued with since...forever.
Artist Inspiration
"Hannah Hoch." Artsy, n.d. Web. 19 Apr. 2017. <https://www.artsy.net/artist/hannah-hoch>.
The artist I chose to emulate is Hannah Hoch. Hannah Hoch is a German artist known in the Dada movement. She is mostly known for her work in the Weimar period. She is also one of the original users of the photo montage. The pieces I chose to emulate is The Puppet Balsamine and Dada-review. Both pieces are collages using magazine clippings and other found materials. The Puppet Balsamine was created in 1927 in Germany. Dada-review was created inn 1919. I chose these two pieces because they were collages that fit what I wanted to create. I liked how she made human figures out of the clippings. I wanted to emulate this in my piece. I also liked the way she fit color into her piece as well. The color gave another meaning to the piece, which I wanted to demonstrate in my piece.
Journalling, Planning and Process
I went throuh many ideas while making this piece. I went through two ideas: deforestation and women stereotypes. I decided not to do deforestation because it was easier to do find magazine clippings of women. I wanted to portray my views on women in the media.
Planning Sketches
Experimentation
Some expirmentation I went through was mediums. I went through many different mediums such as: pen, pencil and sharpie. I used many techniques as well. Crosshatching, stippling, and shading are some.
Actual Process/Tools:
Pencil, Paper, magazine, Pen, Sharpie
Comparison
My piece and my inspiration were very similar. We both used a body in our collage. I made a female body and Hoch made a female dancer. Another way we compared is the overall composition. We both used different forms to create one overall body. Another obvious connection is the fact it is a collage.
Reflection
Overall, I think my collage is a success. The piece is similar to my original composition and uses many different mediums. One problem I had was finishing the drawing to look like my original collage. It was hard to get the proportions right as well as have it look normal. I think the piece looks like my planning collage, but it could have been cleaner. I think another problem I had was finding magazine clippings. I had a limited magazine choice. I only had one magazine that would work. I think it worked out in the end, but it probably would have been better if i had more choices. One success I had was the different textures. I used many different techniques to add shading. I think it looked great in the end, though there was room for improvment.

2) My inspiration explored gender as well as roles.
3) Women jave some harsh stereotypes they have to live up to that arent fair nor even reachable.
4) The central theme was collage and stereotypes
5) Women have to be able to make their own choices about their bodies and how they act. The media has too large of a say in how people manage themselvea.
